Buyer, take a closer look at these pins. Map pins, to me, are very short so that the head practically rests on the map. These are more like dressmakers pins, with the shank a full 1 1/4" long. Don't make the mistake I did.

We bought these pins to track where we have been and where we plan to go. I wound up going to a map store and buying packages of individual colors. The pins you buy in a map store are about 1/4 inch in length. These pins are over an inch long and look rather silly sticking off of a map.

My father framed a large map of the world and a lot of my family have their own color of map pins. We ran out of certain colors. I could not find map pins anywhere (push pins galore but they are too large). So these suited my purpose very well.

These are great if you have a map where you have visited a lot of destinations, particularly if you have visited a large number of cities in one country.

I have a large world map and have traveled extensively throughout Europe and the rest of the world. The pins are longer than most traditional map pins, but this allows the pin head to sit off of the map and not obscure the names of cities or surrounding cities.
Imagine having a large world map on your wall and putting 4 short-length pins in four cities in Switzerland so that the pin heads are flush with the map. People would not even be able to tell that Switzerland existed on a map and your map would look sloppy for so many pins obscuring the surface of the map. Put a longer length pin in it like these and people can read the map and see where you went, or you can reminisce about each city as you read the name.

I get it. Most people want a shorter map pin. But these serve a purpose that shorter map pins can not.
If you are not able to tell from the picture that these map pins themselves are not short like the plethora of other map pins on amazon then you shouldn't be putting a 1-star review complaining about the long length.

These would work better as sewing pins than map pins. These are way too long to mark a map. I agree with the previous reviews. A MAP pin should be 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch long at most. I'll be returning these and looking for a map store to buy some proper map pins.
