Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Charles M. Russell is our most beloved artist of the American West. Through his paintings, sketches, sculpture, illustrated letters, and storytelling, he left an unequalled legacy of images and memories of the Old West. This beautiful volume, accompanied by a DVD, is the first comprehensive description and documentation of Russell's works.

Lavishly illustrated with more than 200 color and black-and-white reproductions of Russell's greatest works, the book features essays by Russell experts and scholars who address important aspects of the artist's life and career. The DVD contains a complete catalogue of the several thousand works Russell created and signed during his lifetime. Montana's Cowboy Artist was as prolific as he was talented, and the catalogue entries provide detailed descriptions of each work's size, medium, date, provenance, and publication and exhibition history. An essential reference for museums, collectors, and scholars, this state-of-the-art DVD offers extensive options for browsing, searching, and sorting the catalogue entries.

The result of more than a decade of research and scholarship, Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonné is published in cooperation with the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West at the University of Oklahoma and by the C. M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlike any other art book ever!, November 12, 2008
As a fan of Charlie Russell art, I had seen the info on this Catalog Raisonne and thought it was just another book on Charles M Russell. There are many, many books on him and his marvelous western art.
Once I foujnd that this book holds a real "key" to view virtually every art item ever produced by Charlie, I bought it as a family gift.
Upon arrival, I discovered the "key" is a coded registered web site unique to each book that creates access to each Russell item.
When the book arrived I was transfixed for several hours of viewing paintings. Some I had never seen and I have been to most of the Russell museum collections.
This is the finest book I own. The O U Press, Byron Price, and the various Russell collections and experts cooperated on this volume to be like no other book that I am aware of today.
If you enjoy western art from any vantage point, be it art, history, Indians, horses, cowboys, western, scenery, animals, color, or just the total joy of appreciating the vastness of this man's knowledge and ability to create art and preserve a slice of time--this is the book for you!
Images of the Lewis and Clark trip to the famous Kit Carson to Rocky Mountain hunting to Indians to cowboys and cattle---it is ALL right here. All indexed with wonderful commentary and details about Russell.
Buy this book for yourself or a gift--it will be enjoyed for years and you will never pass a computer screen again without thinking about viewing some Charlie Russell art today--right now!

5.0 out of 5 stars A core addition, February 3, 2008
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Deftly compiled and edited by B. Byron Price (Director of the University of Oklahoma Press, as well as Director of the Charles M. Russell Center and Charles Marion Russell Chair of Art History, University of Oklahoma), "Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonne" is a superb collection of paintings, sketches, sculptures, illustrated letters, and stories by one of the finest artists ever to record images of the American West. Featuring more than 200 color and black-and-white reproductions of Russell's most famous works, "Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonne" includes informed and informative essays by Brian W. Dippie (Professor of History, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada); Peter H. Hassrick (Director o the Institute of Western American Art, Denver Museum of Art); Rick Stewart (Senior Curator of Western Paintings and Sculpture, The Amon Carter Museum, Forth Worth, Texas); historian and actor Raphael J. Cristy; collector and Russell authority Ginger K. Renner; and B. Byron Price. A core addition to personal, academic, and community library American Art History reference collections, "Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonne" is especially recommended to the attention of scholars, collectors, curators, art dealers, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the life and work of Charles M. Russell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charles M. Russell: A Catalog Raisonne, October 9, 2008
By David M. Hampton (Carson City, NV) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a superb volume for Russell fans and most others who appreciate the art of the late West. The writing about his oils, sketches, wax figurines and bronzes is well illustrated with appropriate art work in each section. There are many clues as to where you can find his life efforts today. The Fred Renner chapter was a delightful surprise. Wife Nancy's contributions are detailed. It is a good read without the snob verbage more typical in the art world of the elite. I believe Charlie Russell would have liked it this way.
