4.0 out of 5 stars Moody Live Stuff, November 7, 2000
By
Scott McFarland (Manassas, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Charles Mingus Quintet + Max Roach (Audio CD)
This and the companion album "Mingus at the Bohemia" were recorded at the Bohemia one night when Max Roach came in and played a little. Mingus' Jazz Workshop had not yet hit the peak that they would within a year on "Pithecanthopus Erectus", but their music is sweet and subtle. Good live moody jazz recording, mostly minor key and frequently stripped-down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Haitian Fight Song, April 15, 2010
This review is from: The Charles Mingus Quintet + Max Roach (Audio CD)
With Haitians fighting for their lives trying to rebuild their earthquake-wrecked homeland, we are reminded of the Mingus tune "Haitian Fight Song"; we evoke it for the renewal of Haiti. This 6 song set (with Max Roach on drums, tracks 2 & 5) has a lot of swing, with great Mingus bass, the piano of Mal Waldron, sax of George Barrow, drums of Willie Jones, with Eddie Bert bringing trombone to the mix. When Mingus bows his bass on "A Foggy Day" you think a steamship is moving across the foggy sea. The bass / drum / sax interaction on "Drums" is a world onto itself. Other favorites: "Haitian Fight Song", "I'll Remember April" and "Love Chant."
