Nothing in the whole course of his career stung him so cruelly to the quick as did this bogus psychography of himself perpetrated by a clerical journalist. It was not petty pride. He never blamed his friend Mr. Graham, who in truth was as much the victim of betrayed confidence as he himself was. But he felt bitterly the practical lampoon which upheld one, who had been a harmless Bohemian all through, in the light of a saint. Not condescending to respond to a sham eulogium which really amounted to an impudent libel, he could scarcely sit still under some of the accusations hurled with such cool recklessness at himself and Mrs. Seymour. Hence he sent for a warm friend and brother in art, Mr. Joseph Hatton; and that gentleman, who at the moment had all but arranged to collaborate with him in a new branch of dramatic narration, viz. fiction founded on a sacred subject--an idea which fell through solely on account of Charles Reade's health-- responded at once to the call.
