5.0 out of 5 stars Reaching for the Ephemeral, June 11, 2001

Martha Ferraro (Little Neck, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Charles Simonds: Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, November 7, 1981-January 3, 1982 (Paperback)
Charles Simonds is known for site specific sculptures that began as non-structured spontaneous art events in the Lower East Side of New York City. Despite the area's avant garde art culture, Charles Simonds is considered a master of innovative non-traditional sculpture.

Due to the non=permanent nature of much of his art, this photo-catalogue, containing 46 photos of his outdoor works, as well as his "Circles and Towers Growing" sequence (shown in the Museum exhibit), offers the reader/viewer a rare opportunity to explore the multiple interpretations inherent in his works.

In addition to the plates of Simonds' work, this catalogue contains three interpretive critiques and an essay by the artist himself. Through the text, the reader gleans a richer understanding of the psyche of Charles Simonds and is also made aware of the multiple possible interpretations of his creations.

This book is an excellent source of information for anyone interested in learning about non-traditional sculpture.
