This is an excellent compilation of late twenties' jazz music in astounding sound quality.

The Charleston Chasers was a pick-up group, recording between 1925-1931 and whose varying personel is like a veritable who's who of white jazz: Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Stan King, Gene Krupa, Phil Napoleon, Red Nichols etc. Here we find the Chasers in their extrapenultimate and penultimate session from 1930 (the final session from 1931 can be heard on Timeless 1065). The boys are in excellent shape, bassist Ward Lay deserving special credit. While Eva Taylor may not be a very good singer, Eddie Walters is delightfully tongue in cheek. The other recording groups on this disc are along the same lines, Ward Lay contributing a rare bass solo (à la Pops Foster) to two Hot Air Men recordings while Joe Tarto plays brass bass with the Mississippi Maulers and The Midnight Airadales and Adrian Rollini bass sax with Cornell Smelser's Orchestra and Rube Bloom and his Bayou Boys. In these groups we find other well known names such as Manny Klein, Jack Teagarden, but also some musicians such as Pete Pumiglio on alto and clarinet and Jack Purvis on trumpet and the aforementioned Cornell Smelser on accordeon who are very worth while discoveries. Booklet info is generous, complete discographical details are provided and remastering is faultless (as always with reissues of this splendid label).
