More About the Author

Charley Harper (August 4, 1922 - June 10, 2007) had an alternative way of looking at nature. His serigraphs were large expanses of rich color, which gave the viewer a very different perspective on the animal kingdom. A conservationist as well as an artist, Harper revealed the unique aspects of his wildlife subjects through highly stylized geometric reduction. Harper said he was "the only wildlife artist who has never been compared to Audubon," yet his wildlife art was just as instructive - the only difference was that Harper laced his lessons with humor. Harper believed that humor made it easier to encourage changes in our attitudes and awareness of environmental concerns.

There was a rare and delightful playfulness in Harper's artwork. There was also graphic genius. Harper said, "When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don't see feathers, fur, scapulars or tail coverts - none of that. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures. I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting: in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe."

Reared on a West Virginia farm, Harper developed an early appreciation and love of animals as well as design. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated from the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he also taught for many years. Gradually, Harper began to lose his interest in realism. "I felt shackled by the laws of perspective and shading and decided that the constant attempt to create the illusion of three dimensions on the two-dimensional plane of the picture was limiting me as an artist. Realistic painting persuades the viewer that he is looking into space rather than at a flat surface. It denies the picture plane, which I affirm and use as an element of design. Wildlife art has been dominated by realism, but I have chosen to do it differently because I think flat, hard-edge and simple."

In his artwork, Harper imaginatively investigated the similarities between human and wild animal behaviors, but completely without anthropomorphism. "I learn as much as I can about the creatures that interest me, and they all do. I observe them and find out how they interact with each other and their environments and ask myself, 'What if?'"

Worth picking up.

It's just the right size for him to hold and the board book format make turning the pages easy for him, but the best part is the design and illustration.

The illustrations are nice and the bright primary colors should be a winner for an infant.

I love this book and the Charlie Harper ABC's book too.

This book is like a small collection of works of art rather than a child's book. I think it is well worth the price. It's beautifully printed. Charlie's illustrations are simple, clever, intelligent and beautiful. This book is far superior to many other children' books out there.

I'm only giving it 4 stars, unfortunately, because many of the illustrations are repeated from the Charlie Harper ABC book. Charley Harper ABCs (Chunky Version) FOUR out of ten pages are repeats. If you want both books, be prepared for that. I wish I had known. I would not have bought this book. Plus the numbers book only goes up to 10, while the ABC book has over 26 pages. So you get a lot more in the ABC book. Even the end page is the same: a photo of Chalie in the woods studying the birds. They put some of his bird illustrations in the photo, so it's a neat collage, and my toddler loves to find the illustrated birds (just two of them) in the photo. I'd had loved it if they did this again using another photo or different bird illustrations.

I'd still recommend this book. Charlie Harper was an amazing artist, and I'm so glad someone decided to share his work with our children!

I bought this book after being really pleased with the ABC's book. I love the art style and my almost-1 year old finds the pictures fascinating.

I loved Charlie Harper's ABCs so well that I wanted to buy this, too.

And it is wonderful!

But some of the pages are exactly the same or very minimally modified between the two books, which is a bit of a bummer. Snails, water-bugs, and chimpanzees do double-duty. Maybe they didn't think people would want to own both books?

Other than that small gripe, it's awesome! Hooray for presenting children with creative and interesting art for their illustrations! There should be more board books like these ones! Highly recommend.

I'm so thrilled that Charley Harper's work is out there again, then when I saw that it went to children's books, I had to get it! It's a different and fantastic book for children. Also get the ABC'S book and memory game!... :)-

This book is a great way to introduce little ones to alternative art, at this is the perfect age to do it. Charley Harper's interpretation of the natural world will spark little one's interest and ability to look at the world around him in his own unique way. It was great for my son, and great as a unique gift for cool parents.

Great little book with clear simple shapes. I am slowly trying to collect all of Charley Harpers art in book form and whatever other pieces I can afford. I'm buying two of each to share with our grandchidren. I display these books near some prints of Harpers that I already own.Insect

I absolutely love the illustrations of this book and I think it's a refreshing change from most counting books. My only complaint is that on a few of the pictures it was difficult for my son to know what he was supposed to count.

Fair disclosure: I got this and several other books as gifts from a friend who works for the publisher after the birth of my son!
