Editorial Reviews

Review

"I thought my 8-year-old was through with coloring books until we came across 'Charley Harper Coloring Book of Birds.' Kids can fill in the 32 oversize line drawings of birds to mimic Harper's originals (shown as full-color miniatures on the back cover) or create their own whimsical, winged wonders." —FamilyFun Magazine

"Ah, to draw like Charley Harper. The longtime Cincinnatian took his greatest creative cues from nature, transforming the vibrant environment into geometric interpretations of flora and fauna. Here, a collection of his featured friends is laid out in black and white, waiting for a helping hand to fill in the hues." — DWELL Magazine

About the Author

For more than four decades, Charley Harper provided art collectors with unique views of the natural world. In a style that Harper called "minimal realism," the artist created stylized drawings and paintings that captured the essence of his subjects using the fewest possible elements.

I bet you will too!

I love Charley Harper's art and this is a great way for kids (and adults) to get to add their own artistic touch to his wonderful drawings.

It's really interesting to see his images stripped down to just black lines without the color.

I actually bought this coloring book not for my children, but for me and my husband. We are big Charley Harper fans, and I thought it would be fun for us to sit together and color when the kids are in bed (maybe make it a date? gotta be creative with small kids and a limited budget for going out and babysitters). I love that they have perforated each page so you can easily tear it out to color it or display it. I think my 2 year old son is jealous he doesn't get to color in this book!

I bought this as a gift, and after leafing through it, I am having a really hard time wrapping it up and shipping it off. The drawings are just beautiful and I want to sit down with my Prismacolors and color every page- and I'm almost 30!

Flipping through this coloring book is just inspiring. Charley Harper's line work is so elegant and simple, yet he created complex images with sparse simple lines. It's really interesting to see his images stripped down to just black lines without the color.

I'm in my 30s and I'm really looking forward to a new box of crayons or colored pencils like a little kid at Christmas so I can go to town on this thing, but it's so pretty I almost don't want to color anything because I'm afraid it'll "ruin" it. I think I'd recommend buying two copies...one to color, and one for a keepsake.

This is a lovely coloring book. I'm an adult and a fan of Charley Harper and this is a nice way to "play" with his images. My only complaint -- the paper is thin, so if you use markers or paint -- the kinds of things that give you the rich color his images call out for -- you will get bleeding onto the next page. Easily fixed with an insert... that's my only quibble. Otherwise, very nice and much better than most coloring books if you're looking for a something for a child.

I'm obsessed with Charley Harper and his "minimal realism", and am very pleased to have such an easy way to explore these lines and deceptively simple shapes. His obvious mastery of realism is even more apparent when you try to reproduce even the simplest of birds! You may capture the shapes and proportions, but the charm and whimsy are much more elusive. All ages can appreciate the difference between basic graphic design and true artistry. I plan to utilize this book for teaching toddlers and practicing my own critical eye. The quality of the paper is very nice, as is the case with every licensed Harper item I've purchased: the Pomegranate calendars and jigsaw puzzles especially. I plan to research each bird and attempt to render them accurately with my Prismacolor colored pencils and watercolors. Printed on only one side! Hooray!

I received both the coloring books(one new, one used,) from Amazon.com,they came in great condition. I first was introduced to Charley's art in the 1950s when they were featured in The "Ford Times".
I have two original prints and a poster for the Michigan Wildlife. I've several of the needlework patterns. The only problem I have for the coloring books is the birds are not identified. and my memory is lousy.

Are such cool coloring pages that I am going to get my mom (who is studied art in college) to paint or color some of these for me to frame. These are really modern looking animals drawn with simple lines and they are on thick paper.

Each page can be torn out and framed. Each page is only one sided so you don't have to worry about bleeding through the paper if you want to use markers. Such lovely art and good quality paper.
