Charley Skedaddle

Through the dark alleys, raging waters, and cramped quarters, Patricia Beatty tells the story of Charley Quinn, a boy continually on the run. He ran from home, from a battle, and from confinement in a henhouse.
When Charley's older sister, Noreen, gets engaged, her husband-to-be does not want to take care of Charley. Charley soon runs away. Wandering through the streets of New York, Charley meets up with new recruits going off to fight in the Civil War. He joins up with them and learns that he will become a drummer boy.
In Charley's first battle, he drops his drum and starts fighting. However, when disaster hits, he again runs away. As he hides in the forest, he comes upon a house. Granny Bent, an old medicine woman who lives in the house, discovers him.
Granny Bent feeds and takes care of Charley. He helps her by working in the garden and chopping wood. But when she has to go to other people's houses, she locks Charley away in a henhouse. It is small and dark inside, so Charley pries a few boards loose and crawls out.
Charley is continually on the run, even after he lives with Granny. Follow him through his journey in Charley Skedaddle.
I did not enjoy this book very much. It was long and somewhat dull. It did not say very much about the Civil War. However if you like a little adventure, you might like this book...

4.0 out of 5 stars Coal Creek Fifth Graders (BVSD), March 13, 2002
This review is from: Charley Skedaddle - Teacher Guide by Novel Units, Inc. (Paperback)
We just finished reading a fantastic book about a 12 year old boy named, Charley. The book is called Charley Skedaddle. Charley went to fight in the Civil War to avenge his brother's death that happened in the battle of Gettysburg.
In a parade in New York Charley meets up with one of his brother's friends, named Con. Con invites Charley to war. There he makes friends with someone named Jem and becomes enemies with Con. When Charley gets to camp he finds out that to be a soldier you have to be 16 years old. So Gormon, an old drummer boy, teaches Charley how to drum. In Charley's first battle he sees Jem die, so Charley runs away. Now Charley is on the run from both the Confederates and the Union. He meets people and has lots of adventures. Charley thinks that he is a coward because he ran away but regains his confidence after an exciting adventure.
We like this book because it's exciting, interesting, terrific and a thrill to read.
