5.0 out of 5 stars The Kurt Vonnegut segment, May 31, 2008
Vonnegut is a great American original. He deadpans completely Charlie Rose opening remarks which call him a 'genius'. He is not simply a no- nonsense guy. He is also the kind of guy who thinks from left- field and throws his own crazy way of seeing things at you unexpectedly. He has come to talk about a collection of his early small - writing collected and edited by a Peter Reed. Vonnegut had thought that these pieces were juvenalia best forgotten about. But after Reed collected them Vonnegut showed them to his publisher who wanted them. Rose in the course of the conversation does ask the obvious question about whether they are not exploiting the writer's reputation to publish not very good stuff.
Vonnegut has interesting things to say about Writing. He talks about it as a person 'developing their soul'.He speaks about the time when America hungered for short- stories. And he speaks about how now writing workshops on University campuses turn them out but only for local journal consumption. He believes in Writing even when there is no publication possibility. Vonnegut says people should write poems to each other. Charlie Rose speaks about poetry as that which expresses the deepest feelings the person has. A wonderful definition. Vonnegut is urged by Rose to at the age of seventy- six, give the world another novel. But Vonnegut says he has used up all his material. And that it is finite. Rose nonetheless suggests he might do another novel. As it would turn out Vonnegut would produce another volume but it would be non- fiction.
This was a wonderful show , a real conversation between two very good guys.
