I tend to do a lot of research before buying, and though it soon became apparent to me that reusuable swim diapers were probably going to be better for my girls than disposable, I couldn't really find a frontrunner for the best kind, the biggest complaint across the board seeming to be that they don't hold in urine. So when I ended up with three different kinds, I decided to put them to the test, pour water in them, and see what happens.

Obviously, if these diapers don't fit snugly on the legs and waist, they will leak out the sides, but I wanted to see how much water they would hold before they leaked through the diaper. So I turned these bum-down and poured water in them, making a big watery puddle in the bum of the diaper until the water got so high it leaked out the sides. I was using a few different sizes, so I didn't bother measuring, but here are my results.

Charlie Banana: This was the smallest size I had, and it was tough getting water in there. A lot of it leaked out the legs because I wasn't holding it level. but none of it leaked through the diaper, even when I dumped it, wrung it out, and poured more in. These impressed me the most because they also felt the softest, so that gave them an edge on the competition.

Finis: These were the largest ones that I had, so I got quite a big puddle of water in the diaper before it started overflowing out the sides. These didn't leak, but I got these as a precaution for my three year-old, who is potty trained but will still occasionally have an accident if she's having too much fun to go potty (plus I'm pretty sure she thinks it's fun to pee in the pool). So I was slightly disappointed that these have somewhat of a plastic-y feel to them.

We needed something for a potty-trained little girl who would wet the bed on rare ocassion, and totally freak out. She has very sensitive skin and disposable training pants made her break out in a rash. She is 29 lbs and tall (wears a 4T) for sizing reference.

I tried just about one of everything, so my reviews of all are below:

Blueberry Diapers Daytime Potty Training Pants: I know they say "Daytime Potty Training Pants" but they worked really great for night too. Super absorbant and comfortable according to my daughter. The material inside isn't as breathable as I'd like, but it definitely is absorbant and doesn't seem to bother her skin. These seem to be the best made out of all that we tried and look like they are going to stand up to wash after wash. Elastic around the legs is cloth-covered and fits perfectly. They are a little bit bulkier than some, but not so much that it would deter me from buying again. My only super small suggestion is that they could make a couple more "girly" prints, but my little tomboy prefers blue, monsters and dinosaurs, so for us, it worked out great anyway! I saw some reviews said these ran big, so I ordered a medium and they fit perfectly but with very little grow room. I would say to order based on manufacturer sizing suggestions.

Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Training Pants (SL 28-37 lbs) in Zoo: These are my favorite! The inner lining is breatheable and these are very abosorbant without being bulky. Fantastic product! Sizing was a bit confusing; there seem to be a ton of different sizes. Look at the the manufacturer's web site for pound ranges and then search for the size you need on Amazon! Elastic fits great around the legs.

Charlie Banana Training/Swim Diaper Large: I found these to run a bit small.

These swim diapers are great. They're obviously pretty cute (my shallow reason for choosing them), but they also do their job well. A little bit of padding in the crotch helps with absorption, good leg elastic and a PUL outer keeps messes well contained. My ONLY reservation about this diaper is the fact that it is a pull-on style. If my son does happen to make a mess of it, it is incredibly difficult to get the diaper off without that mess getting all over his legs, feet, and the towel he's laying on. If your kid doesn't poo in the pool, these are the swimmy diapers for you. If your kid does, then get a swim diapers with side tabs.

these are super cute and work as swim diapers but we've had trouble getting them clean or smelling fresh (we have loads of experience with cloth diapers), they seem to hold the urine a little to well and when mixed with lake/pool/sea water creates a hard to remove stench.

Also had an unfortunate poop in them and it was very hard to get out/clean etc. Even as we are on the hippie side of parenting when it comes to the environment and our kid we are/have switched to disposable swim diapers or the velcro opening ones like: Bummis Swimmi Cloth Diapers, Turtles, Large (22-30 lbs)

Bought these for my three month old for a swim diaper. We didn't use them that much, but they were really great. I bought a medium for him, and I don't think he'll be able to use them past five months. That's what I expected though. He's a big boy. I think he was about 18 pounds when I got these and he wore them last weekend at about 22 pounds. I'm still happy to be able to use these instead of disposables and will definitely buy the next size up in this brand.
