The program is an appreciation of the American theatre director George Abbott. Theatre critic Frank Rich, Juilliard School Director Mary Rodgers, and Abbott's widow Joy Abbott speak about Abbott's contribution to the theatre. Abbott died at the age of one-hundred and eight and his long career went from the twenties to the sixties, when there was a change in taste in the theatre and the book- musical the kind of productions he did went out of favor. Abbott is spoken of as one who fostered many of the theatre's major talents, including Bob Fosse, Hal Prince, and a host of others. His widow Joy spoke in a clear and especially moving way about him. She said even in the very last part of his life when he suffered a bit from dementia he would insist on getting up and getting dressed to go to the theatre. Abbott was famed for fast-paced entertaining productions for a kind of vibrant joy in plays in which often there was dancing and singing. As usual Charlie Rose is at his best in these appreciations of the work and life of one who made a major contribution to the culture.
