Tim Berners-Lee segment A true modest benefactor of humanity, November 5, 2007
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Tim Berners-Lee; James Redford & Maro Chermayeff; Edward Koch (October 20, 1999) (DVD)
Tim Berners- Lee is the person who today is credited with being the architect of the World-Wide- Web. His appearance on Charlie Rose is connected with the book he wrote telling the story from his point- of- view. One of the most well- known elements of the story is Berners- Lee deliberate neglect of patenting what he did. In other words, he avoided making personal profit out of what he did. And this attitude also informs the way he speaks about the Web, and its future application to Rose. He sees it as a resource in which shared creative work can be done. The linking of pages is one part of the process but the linking of minds who can operate in interaction with each other is for him a central element. An extremely intelligent if not forcefully articulate person he continues to work from his base at MIT on developments and applications related to the Web.
It is nice to see for a change a person who seems less driven by the idea of putting himself forward than he does by the conception of serving humanity and its creative future.
