4.0 out of 5 stars The Francine Prose segment The P.D. James segment, January 29, 2008
Prose speaks about her latest novel. She is an intelligent person but there is no great spark or humor in her conversation. She speaks about the novel she has written about academic life which in some way is a take- off on the 'Blue Angel'. Rose as usual finds words of praise for his guest and makes her feel at home. But there seems nothing especially noteworthy or remarkable about the interview.
In contrast the P.D. James segment is a truly outstanding one. James is a sparkling strong personality. She comes to speak about a memoir she has published chronicling one year of her life. In their conversation she and Charlie Rose have wonderful rapport. She refers to her husband's mental illness and tells why she will not write about it in detail. She also indicates her disapproval of John Bailey for having written of his wife Iris Murdoch's Alzheimer's. She speaks about her own fiction a bit, about the importance of character. She tells of her love of Jane Austen, and of how she read her during the Blitz during the time of an attack when pregnant and about to give birth to her second child. She tells about Britain's finest hour ' Never have so many owed so much to so few' She speaks about the little boats that went out and saved the Army of England. She also speaks about contemporary English politics. A truly outstanding interview. I watched it not because I am a reader of her but because my dear friend Andrew Waldman is such a great fan of P.D. James. It is clear that James is a case of a writer so good at creating character because she is such a fine character herself.
