Michael Shermer is one of the world's most well- known skeptics, the founder and managing editor of 'Skeptic Magazine'. He comes to speak to Charlie Rose about a book in which he shows the ridiculousness of all kinds of hokum. He says that his Skepticism is really a kind of belief in the scientific method, and that his great teacher has been Carl Sagan. Evidence, evidence, evidence. Test and test again. Shermer takes on weird and strange kinds of stuff, seances for instance- but also historical matters of great weight. For instance he explains why Holocaust deniers who go against the testimonies of thousands of survivors, who make outrageous claims with no consideration of historical context- are so worthy of contempt. He too admits that while he is skeptical about the existence of God he knows he cannot prove that God is not. He everywhere displays a certain modesty and reasonableness.
