4.0 out of 5 stars Review of the John Updike segment, November 15, 2007
Updike comes to Charlie Rose to promote his novel, "Seek my Face". This book is the story of two artists' life and is taken to be modeled on the lives of Jackson Pollack and his wife Lee Krasner. Updike tells Rose that the female leading character has been changed considerably from the original. He describes the course of Pollack's career from a muddled beginning to a period of great clarity and masterpiece, and then to a third period of decline. Updike also relates to a piece from the critic Sven Birketts who says that Updike like others of his generation Bellow, Roth has in some sense lost it The torch has passed from them. They are without energy. Updike is not offended responds in the same calm slightly amused voice which he speaks with throughout. Updike admits the energy is less now but says that there too are advantages in old age, advantages which come of knowing many more people, of having more technical virtuosity. Updike seems quite modest in talking about his own work, and the place he imagines it takes in the minds and hearts of the multitudes of humanity. At the same time he seems extremely polished and confident, pleased with where he is and what he has done. Rose opened the segment by mentioning Updike's more than fifty published books, his Pulitzers, National Book Award, the novels, stories, essays, reviews. Updike is one of the most skilled and cultured of all American writers one whose reach is truly tremendous and has touched upon so many different areas of creative life. He is like Rose in this and their conversation is extremely civilized. Yet there is no fire here.
