4.0 out of 5 stars The Namesake- Lahiri - Nair segment, April 6, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Rahm Emanuel; Henry Waxman; Mira Nair & Jhumpa Lahiri (March 19, 2007) (DVD)
This is a conversation about the film 'The Namesake'. It is with the author Jumpha Lahiri and the film's director Mira Nair. They speak about the Indian immigrant experience in America, about being between two worlds. In a sense this is the Indian version of what is a favorite theme of American literature. Lahiri who grew up in Rhode Island says that for her India was her parents. And she in her absolutely one- hundred percent American accent and manner of expression says that in some way her parents' experience, their making the transition from one world to another is more compelling and interesting than her own.
Charlie Rose shows clips from the film which are not particularly striking or moving.
There is a kind of clarity, rationality and dignity in the way the two women speak about their own creative work. But the deep feeling which may well be in the book and film do not come across in the interview.
