George Will Jr. is one of America's great public intellectuals. He comes to Charlie Rose with his new book of essays, 'The Woven Figure'. Will speaks about the power of ideas, and says the time is paradoxical because
Conservative ideas are in the ascendant while Conservative political figures are not. He speaks dismissively of President Clinton who he sees as a neglible President. He says Ronald Reagan was one of the top Presidents of the second rank. The first rank is those who faced tremendous crises, and prevailed- Washington, Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. Nonetheless Will commends Reagan for having won the Cold War, defeated the Evil Empire and restored Americans' faith in themselves and their society.
Will is strongly confident that American society can meet the challenges which face it. He speaks about the failures of too great Government intervention. He believes perhaps over- optimistically that Poverty and inability to manage in the system can be overcome by individuals without government interference. Will is a forceful and clear spokesman for the Conservative ideology he so strongly believes in. Charlie Rose does not question him in as hard a way as he might have, but instead conducts a cordial conversation with him.
