5.0 out of 5 stars The Ruth Gruber Natasha Richardson segment, June 5, 2008
Ruth Gruber is a modern heroine. She comes to speak with Charlie Rose in regard to a mini- series starring Natasha Richardson based on her book,"The Haven". The 'Haven' is Gruber's recounting of the story of one- thousand Jews who were let into the United States after Robert Morgenthau then Sec.of Treasury shamed President Roosevelt in regard to State Dept. complicity in covering up the dimensions of the Holocaust. Gruber speaks about receiving the special appointment to go and accompany these refugees, about her work in teaching them English, and in continuing to help them when they were placed in a camp in Oswego, New York. She says what she is most proud of is the subsequent contributions these immigrants made to the United States. Richardson is sympathetic and silent for most of the interview . Charlie Rose conducts this interview also with great intelligence and sympathy. His appreciation of Gruber is apparent and has so often happens on his show he makes a specially warm connection with the guest.
At the heart of this program though is a horrifying reality. One thousand were saved and their story is told here. Untold thousands more could have been saved had the State Dept. and the U.S. Government had a different posture.
