Charles MacArthur was a gifted, lovable rogue who wrote many screenplays and a couple of books, married "the First Lady of the American Theater," raised two children with her, and saw their daughter die of poliomyelitis. Ben Hecht was his sometimes co-author and partner-in-mischief. Hecht's book is a glossed-over but loving account of his friend's life. What it sometimes lacks in meat and interpretation is made up in anecdotes -- this book is a Valentine.

Every generation is given a handful of great writers and thinkers to be shared with avid readers. Ben Hecht is one of them. Between the 1930s and 40s he is among the very short list of Hollywood's revered script writers. Charlie MacArthur is his muse. Ben lovingly details with several anecdotes and poetic recall the great and entertaining times they share with each other and the tight love Charlie has for his wife Helen Hayes.

It is difficult to explain how beautifully crafted is this book of memories. It is 232 pages long and could be another 100 without the reader getting antsy. Please read it.

I read this book from a local library in the 1970's, while just looking for interesting biographies to read. Took a chance on Amazon to find it again and was very pleased to find it. Quality of the copy was very good.
