1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Shalom Freedman HALL OF FAMETOP 1000 REVIEWER on June 11, 2008
Rodney Brooks of MIT, Eric Horvitz of Microsoft Research, and Ron Brachman of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency discuss with Charlie Rose the latest developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Brachman speaks about devices being used by the military in Iraq, which are for instance doing anti- terror work, checking suspicious objects, and thus saving lives. There is also mention of medical applications, and applications in various areas of industry. Horvitz says that when the field started one of the major efforts was to make a device which could play chess. Charlie Rose pointing to the defeat of Kasparov by Big Blue says that goal seems to have been achieved. But all three of the experts gathered here have a strong sense that the field is only in its beginnings. They point to the fact that there are many kinds of relatively simple work which is much better done by workers in China and India than by devices built here. While they all feel there has been progress in many areas they have a strong sense of how far they have go . Still they all seem to believe in the great future of the field. Horvitz even mentions the idea of one day being able to 'create consciousnesses' And this when he believes that ultimately artificial intelligence development will help us better understand human intelligence. Developments in language recognition, in perception are also spoken about.
