5.0 out of 5 stars A conversation of specially great interest July 22, 2008
Two Nobel Prize winners, Eric Kandel and Harold Varmus discuss Kandel's life and work. Kandel tells a chilling story at the beginning. How he as a nine- year old child had been given a special toy by his parents for his birthday. He played with it for two days and then suddenly there was a knock on the door. Two Nazi policemen were there. They emptied the apartment completely taking everything including the child's toy. Kandel begins his discussion on Memory with this incident.
He speaks to Varmus about the whole course of his career, about the work he has done in Memory studies. He also speaks about diseases of the mind, and about possible means of treatment. He points out that changes in long- term memory mean genetic transformation. He speaks about short- term memory involving transient connections, but the long- term Memory involving changes in genes. He points to the physiological basis of Memorists who do not have the 'repressor' chemical which most people have. Their lives are made miserable by their being flooded by all kinds of information they do not need. Kandel details the researches he has done, and talks also about the state of the art in the study of the physiological basis of brain- function. He also says something about the work being done in regard to brain- disturbances, Autism, Schizophrenia and Depression.
