This discussion is supposed to be about moderation in the Arab world. What it becomes is a Johnny- one- note iteration of the common fallacy that solving the Arab- Israeli problem will make everything alright in the Middle East. The absurdity of this discussion is underlined by the fact that the major division between Sunnites and Shiites in the Middle East is not spoken of. Nothing is said about their horrific acts of violence committed by Sunnites and Shiites against each other. Khouri presents the mendacious premise that the Arab world has somehow become more moderate as evidenced by the rise of Hizbollah and Hamas. Muashar is more moderate and does condemn suicide- bombings. There is almost nothing said in this discussion about Iraq and the effect Islamic extremism is having on it- and on American soldiers there. Implicit in this discussion is a condemnation of the Bush Administration and at the end a support for the candidacy of Barack Obama.
Charlie Rose who I so much admire and respect simply is given a propaganda lesson here by two very shrewd operators. They even seem to convince him that Ahmadinejad is a kind of minor aberration of no great significance instead of an Islamic Radical Fundamentist in consonance with the basic regime ideology in Tehran.I will say in praise of them, and this is the only point of moderation in the discussion is that both call for a peace between Israel and the Arab world. The fact that they do do this should not be minimized. But on the whole they do a wonderful cover- up job of concealing the anti - Western Extremism which everyday pours forth from Arab Media.
