This interview was made on June 30, 2004 the day Saddam Hussein is being brought to trial in Baghdad. Amanpour gives an update on the situation. At this point Falluja is still an independent terrorist pocket and she speaks about how difficult it will be for the Americans to take it. She speaks positively about General Petraeus and the work he has done in the Mosul area. She speaks about the unpopularity of the United States presence , but also points out that most Iraqis fear the U.S.'s leaving. She suggests the U.S. would have been wiser to have after their entrance in April 2003 to bring in a broader coalition of countries to support their enterprise. She points out that the society is in some ways at rock - bottom economically. She points out that individual U.S. commanders have done great work in improving their local areas but that the major infrastructure matters have not been dealt with.
She speaks with confidence and decisiveness, and considerable knowledge.
