Editorial Reviews

First, Charlie talks about Iraq with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, historian Alistair Horne author of "A Savage War of Peace", Tom Ricks of the "Washington Post" and retired colonel and author Andrew Bacevich. They examine the course of the war and the campaign against the insurgency. They draw parallels between the situation in Iraq and France's losing struggle against insurgents in Algeria in the late 1950s and the early 1960s. Finally, a conversation with Donny George, former director of the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad, who discusses his experiences overseeing Iraq's national museum under Saddam Hussein and the tragic looting of the institution following the U.S. invasion in 2003.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Shalom Freedman HALL OF FAMETOP 1000 REVIEWER on February 27, 2008
This was an unusually rich, informative, intelligent discussion of the situation in Iraq. It opened with Henry Kissinger explaining why withdrawal from Iraq by the United States, perceived defeat of the U.S. by a Muslim force would be disastrous for the U.S. position throughout the world. He speaks about the negative effect not only in the Middle East but in Turkey and Indonesia, and India- wherever there are large Islamic communities that can be enticed to more radical Islamic fundamentalism. Horne essentially agrees with Kissinger and says that Vietnam was a local conflict in comparison to the Iraqi war. He speaks about his much-praised book about the French defeat in Algiers "Savage War of Peace". He cautions agaist the use of torture as it was the public outcry over the use of torture which led to the defeat of the French in Algeria. On the other side of the fence Ricks and Bachevich argue for termination of what they see as a futile war in Iraq. Bachevich says it took the U.S military only fifteen years to recovery from defeat in Vietnam and he seems to feel fifteen years in a short time. Rose is as usual a master in conducting the discussion. He knows what he is talking about, and asks each of the participants the right critical questions.
