Editorial Reviews

Charlie's little sister Lola is "very small and very funny," with an infectious laugh and a young child's tendency toward intense enthusiasm and emotions. In this second volume of Charlie and Lola episodes from the BBC, the ever responsible Charlie helps his sister through the difficulties of everything from bedtime rituals to delayed gratification and disappointment. A wide awake Lola possesses a seemingly inexhaustible arsenal of excuses why she simply can't go to bed in "I Am Not Sleepy and I Will Not Go to Bed," but a patient and creative Charlie creates a bedtime routine that celebrates Lola's imagination AND gets her to bed with a relative minimum of fuss. Dealing with disappointment is especially difficult for Lola, but Charlie always seems to have an innovative remedy like unearthing just the right book to check out from the library when Lola's favorite book is already checked out, good advice about the perfect birthday gift for a friend, and a creative way to salvage a picnic that's been ruined by a rainstorm. In "I Want to Play Music Too," it's Lola that ends up teaching Charlie a lesson about the value of collaboration and creativity in music when she rescues a flailing Charlie during a school musical performance. Anglophiles, fans of Lauren Child's Charlie and Lola books, and children ages 2 to 7 will delight in these six escapades featuring the spunky Lola and her clever brother Charlie. Bonus features include an interactive hide and seek game, funny outtakes, and hidden surprises. --Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

Charlie has this little sister Lola. She is small and very funny. Lola will NEVER eat a tomato! She is also not sleepy and will not go to bed. And how will she cope when she is not well and may never smile again? It falls to Charlie to win her around, and he uses every trick in the book - logic, humor, but mostly, the power of his imagination. Using 2D cel animation, paper cutout, fabric design, photomontage and archive footage, all the distinctive style and exuberance of Lauren Child's award-winning picture books come to life. Glorious music and sound effects help to conjure up fantastical worlds that only a child could invent, while realistic dialogue, voiced by children, ensures these magical adventures really resonate with kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Set of Episodes October 15, 2006
"Charlie and Lola" is a delightful series based on books by Lauren Child. It is seen on Playhouse Disney in the United States and on CBeebies in Great Britain.

In this series, Charlie has a little sister named Lola who is small and very funny. Charlie often helps Lola with her problems and though they have some sibling rivalry at times, they are usually pretty nice with each other. Lola often has an unusual way of seeing things, or can be a bit stubborn, but Charlie helps her to look at things in a new way or to try new things.

This DVD features six stories from the first season of the show. That's on less than Vol. 1, but it's still a great release. The stories are "I Am Not Sleepy and Will Not Go to Bed" (based on a book), "But That is My Book" (also based on a book), "Boo! Made You Jump!," "I Want to Play Music Too," "The Most Wonderfullest Picnic in the Whole Wide World" and "You Won't Like This Present as Much as I Do!"

The animation is unique and fun to look at. The main theme and background music are all very catchy. The British-accented dialogue and phrases also add a lot to the series.

"Charlie and Lola" airs full-screen on Playhouse Disney, but it is presented in widescreen on the DVD. Close-captioning is not offered --- there are subtitles instead. The DVD also includes a few bonuses / surprises --- watch for them to pop up while both on the main and episode-selection menus.

5.0 out of 5 stars My children are small and very funny July 6, 2006

We are Disney Channel people so it is always refreshing when they add a new series to their line up. We were instantly drawn to Charlie & Lola. My children are 1/2 and 1/2 (British & American that is) and we love to see a bit of Daddy's culture & accent on the show. The animation is creative and the lessons are appropriate for 2-5 year olds. Often we will ask our daughter (3) what would Lola do? Our son is only 17 months but he still watches with our daughter. We log onto their website to play their games and print out pages to color. It's a great little show and we love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids sit transfixed in front of the screen May 18, 2009
My two and a half year old sits mesmerised at Charlie & Lola, he asks for it continuously and has even started to speak with an english accent which I am sure wont last! One thing worth mentioning is that even with it on in the background, for some unusual reason, none of it begins to be annoying to adults and it can be left on in a loop safely without fear of danger to parent's sanity.

He took it into his day-care and displayed it proudly to the other kids of similar ages (My 11 year old sits equally transfixed at this DVD and at the younger one's attention span!) and the staff there reported similar interest with all the kids there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love, love, and adore Charlie and Lola January 11, 2009

What a gem this show is. What a rare find....a cartoon that is educational, sweet, funny, appeals to both boys and girls, appeals to parents, and is not the typical, seen it once, its annoying now, kind of kid show. The characters are just so likable. I love the positive "brother-sister" relationship, and we enjoy their British accent as well. Our kids wanted this as thier birthday "theme", so we had the Charlie and Lola, plates, cups, pinata, and so on. Also love the Charlie and Lola books. Great literacy tool. Chances are your local library, or your kids school library has a few of these around. I would say for AGES: 3-7 . By the way, if you don't find this show pleasing, you must be one of those parents who prefer their kids watching the nutty, garbage that dominates the air waves these days. Too many parents let thier kids spend hours viewing garbage. Just because something is animated doesnt mean its appropriate for children. Guard your childs eyes and ears. Childhood is so brief, guard it and savor it like a good parent should. Pink milk for everyone......."cheers".

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series January 3, 2007
By Coastie
Anyone that is familiar with the antics of Lola and her older brother Charlie has been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the dvd. Even though this is geared to the 3 to 6 crowd I enjoy watching them as my daughter has an inner Lola. I just see so many things about Lola that are so true to little girls in general. From her obvious adoration of her big brother to conversing with Soren Lorensen her imaginary friend. Her stubborness, her creativity, her innocence, budding independence and the "me-ness" most young kids possess. No one could be disappointed in owning this dvd, the stories are clever, not preachy, great animation, wonderful British accents (my daughter now drinks pink milk)and just a little different from everything else out there. If you enjoy the animated series, look for the books, they are witty, brightly illustrated, and when you read them you can hear the voices of Charlie and Lola. My daugher also hates to get her hair cut, and will never eat a tomato.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best thing to ever happen to Playhouse Disney March 30, 2007
"Charlie and Lola" is the most delightful, endearing and humorous children's animated series ever made. It is a brillantly simple protrayal of the imaginative world our children create. Little Lola is so cute; my chldren and I can not get enough of her-- she is our "favourite and our best". And the line drawing animation is so refreshing. Our favorite episodes: Music; I am an alligator; Lolaland.
