5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Sharansky segment A man of principle and courage, November 4, 2007
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Marat Safin; Natan Sharansky; Vaclav Havel (September 13, 2000) (DVD)
This is a review of the interview with Natan Sharansky. The interview takes place as Israeli Prime Minister Barak is negotiating with Yassar Arafat under the sponsorship of U.S. President Clinton. What would happen in those negotations is that Arafat would reject Barak's offer, an offer which was for most Israeli unacceptably generous. In any case Sharansky comes to vigorously restate what has been the Israeli consensus position on Jerusalem. It is that Jerusalem is the soul of the Jewish people, and that it should not be redevided. Sharansky makes an impassioned argument for holding on to Jerusalem as symbol central to the Jewish people. He speaks correctly about the fact that Jerusalem has been open to the three monotheistic faiths as free place for worship only since Israelis took over the Temple Mount in 1967. He does not enter the issue of why Jews are not allowed prayer on the Temple Mount. Rose is insistent on supporting Barak, supporting the position that 'peace' will come out of 'compromise' on Jerusalem.
Sharansky again proves himself here a person of principle and integrity. His courage has meant always that he just did not go along to get along, but truly stood for what he believes in.
