5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Melodies, May 20, 2004

Some of th best melodies from this year. From the very first listen each song is memorable, with refined lyrics and lush melodies. The songs flow into each other with cascading bombast. Tracks like Gather the Horses, and Close to Home build layers of strings and guitar into massive waves of sound. Charlies voice is powerful, like Bono it can woo a melody wih confidence or belt those sharp notes nailing a cinematic feel to each track. The real suprise on this album is When the Sun Goes Down. It starts out with a mechanic drumbeat that contrasts the fluid guitar, and lays down a hypnotic background that lulls you into the words. Then it shocks into a heroic screamer that blew my head off. Reminded me of the Stone Roses anthemic "I am the Ressurection". I listened to it several times in a row to figure out what-tha-Fudge just happened. A great album as a whole, and some astounding singles.

I listen to lots of music, and found this to be pure enchantment. Charlie Mars is a romantic, a poet, and a brilliant wordsmith. Haunting words, beautiful music. Hard to select a favorite. Glad to own this one, and recommend this musician!

4.0 out of 5 stars back to his roots, July 16, 2004

Charlie Mars is one of a kind. Everyone who has the chance to see him live falls in love with his music. His old stuff is worth checking out even if his self titled CD doesn't do it for you. His earlier stuff is more soulful, less pop-ish. Enjoy the unique sound and his sexy raspy voice. I love "black dress" and "broken arrow"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking album from a veteran musician, July 14, 2004

This review is from: Charlie Mars (Audio CD)
Charlie's production has undergone a metamorphosis, now including rich string accompaniments and soft electronic sounds in some places. The lyrics seem painfully earnest, a vehicle for airing the soul out. I have seen the look on his face as he let a few of these songs out, one at a time, and you can just tell he's put his life and soul into this work. It's just art, plain and simple. Charlie's music will definitely stay with you, long after the music's over.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st UK fan, May 24, 2004

Well, this album is my first Charlie Mars experience. It's fantastic.......the combination of Charlie's song writing and Rick Beato's production means that this album delivers pure atmospheric and emotive music. This album goes a long way to blowing away the stereotypes of the American singer songwriter genre.

This album is great and I'm constantly listening to "Gather your horses". It's worth buying the album purely on the strength of this song.

It's brilliant.

Elliot Smith meets Pete Yorn meets Bob Dylan... if you like any or really like all you'll love this CD. Quality lyrics, complex harmonies, driving guitar backed orchestration, great acoustics. A really superb staple in Adult Alternative rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars This album is great, but where is the new one? Like a Bird, Like a Plane, April 8, 2009
This review is from: Charlie Mars (Audio CD)
I was first introduced to this album through Oxford American magazine's yearly music compilation. I loved Silver Buttons enough to buy the album. It remains one of my favorite cds to this day.

Charlie Mars just put out another album that demonstrates a great deal of growth and is a fun album to listen to...
Like a Bird, Like a Plane is worth buying. Funky rhythms and a great southern voice, makes you feel good listening to it. Special attention to the title track and Listen to the Darkside.

4.0 out of 5 stars Above Average, November 3, 2008
By
This review is from: Charlie Mars (Audio CD)
Although no particular song stands out from the rest, all in all an above average album here. Good from the first track to the last. Easy going, soulful countryish rocky pop....yea, thats what it is. Looking forward to another cd!
