One important aspect of the my interest in the Charlie Rose show is that in it I often 'get to know' get to 'see and hear' someone I have long been curious about. The book 'Catch 22' is a legendary work and one which I could never myself 'get into'. Nonetheless the curosity to see and hear its author was great.
Since the book was supposedly one of the funniest ever written I expected Joseph Heller to be a 'funny guy'. On this show he is an affable, elderly man of a certain vanity in speaking about his own books. He tells of his serious illness, hospitalization, his friend Speed Vogel, his divorce, his marrying his nurse, his writing this sequel to 'Catch 22'. He tells how for the first time in it he creates rounded characters who the critics think are the best thing in the book. Rose does not ask or say to him the truth which is that Heller is very much a 'one- book person' in the hearts and minds of readers- And that this sequel to 'Catch 22' will not be another 'Catch 22'.
PS No one says the author of a funny book has to be funny in person. And Heller is not.
