5.0 out of 5 stars The Netanyahu and Duffy segments, October 30, 2007
Duffy discusses with Charlie Rose the Clinton autobiography. He says it is most interesting about the pre- Presidential years, and a race- through of the Presidential ones. Duffy says Clinton gives much space to his nemesis, Kenneth Starr. Clinton also speaks with Duffy about current reality, and supports President Bush on his effort in Iraq. A tame report.
The real interest for me in this show is the Netanyahu segment. The interview takes place in June 2004 when Israel is contemplating disengagement from Gaza. It is three years later and by this time clear that Netanyahu was absolutely right in demanding that Israel control the entrances to Gaza. That was not done on the Sinai side and Israel is now facing not only continuous rocket- fire from Gaza, but the possibility of a war there. Netanyahu also talks about the general situation in which Israel faces an intransigent 'other' which will not recognize its existence and make peace with it. He stresses the major point which is so often obscured in Middle East discussions including those of Charlie Rose. That the situation is not a symmetrical one, and the heart of the conflict is the refusal of the 'other side' to recognize and live in peace with Israel. Netanyahu also speaks about the 'separation wall' which has done such a good job in diminishing Palestinian suicide- terror against Israel. His presentation is clear and convincing . The first part of the interview has to do with the economic turnaround Israel has gone through since he took over as Finance Minister, privatizing a number of important sectors of the Economy , making painful cuts in a wide variety of areas. What Netanyahu does not tell Rose is how much popular resentment there is at Netanyahu for making these changes. He lost a lot of political points for doing what is right economically. In any case it was a real pleasure to hear someone speak so clearly and convincingly on the situation of Israel, and the terror and rejectionism it faces from the other side.
