Charlie Rose talks to heart surgeon and department chairman of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic- Toby Cosgrove. Cosgrove says some interesting things about the treatment of disease in general. He says that the surgeon and his mechanical means are usually involved in the first part of dealing with a disease. Orthopedic surgeons took care of polio patients before the vaccine came to prevent the disease. So too with tuberculosis. First the surgeons, then the medicines, and after this the process of prevention.
Cosgrove talks about President Clinton's triple- bypass, the way success rates in this surgery have gone from ten percent of patients 'lost' several years ago to less than one percent today.
He says however the epidemic of cardiovascular disease needs varied kinds of treatment, well beyond what surgery can do.
