The Gombrich segment, January 31, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Michael Crichton; Ernst Gombrich (September 22, 1995) (DVD)
One of the major joys of watching Charlie Rose is his bringing to the viewer at home , the sights and sounds of a significant personality that one may have known and read about for years but never seen in person. So I had the great pleasure in this segment of seeing and hearing one of the great Art Historians of the past generation Ernst Gombrich. Gombrich talks about his tremendously popular work "The Story of Art" and about the distinction between 'knowing' and 'seeing', a distinction which structures the work. Gombrich talks too about Modern Art and the transformation in seeing which came with the Impressionists.
Charlie Rose is as always cordial and intelligent. But in this interview he is dealing with something he does not know that much about, and with someone who has an enormous depth of knowledge and culture. Thus what he does is not quite up to what he might have done. He conducts the Interview in a bit of a childish way , asking such questions "Who are your favorite painters" and "What is your Favorite Period of Art". Gombrich with his Vienese accented English is not at all patronizing but rather does his best with such questions. He tells the story of how the writing of his most popular came about after he had written a Child's History of the World. The publisher wanted him to do a 'Child's History of Art' but he said that this was impossible. The publisher offered him then to write a history of Art. "The Story of Art" was the result.
Gombrich also talks a bit about his years in England at Warburg- Courtald Institute, and his early years of study in Vienna.
A wonderful opportunity to see a giant of the generation.
