5.0 out of 5 stars An appreciation of Ronald Reagan, May 18, 2008
Charlie Rose uses clips from old shows and puts together an appreciation of Ronald Reagan. For me there was a great deal of information and insight in these conversations. Reagan is described as an 'egoless politician' one who did not try to upset the impression that he really was not very smart. He is lauded by most of these guests for his great accomplishment, putting an end to the Cold War, in effect defeating what he had called 'The Evil Empire'. He is spoken about as a person of very clear goals who realized the major ones of ending the Cold War, changing the role of government and limiting its interference in American lives, reducing taxes. His former aide Michael Deaver surprises Charlie Rose by saying that Reagan was the 'kindest man' he ever met. Deaver says Reagan would not allow personal insults against anyone. Reagan is also described as a consummate actor who understood that the Presidency was his 'greatest role'. There is also much said about his aplomb, his refusal to be stressed, the relaxing feeling he radiated, and with it the confidence. Edmund Morris who wrote a controversial biography of him says he was culturally ignorant but very smart. The actor Warren Beatty speaks of his congeniality even towards those who were politically on the opposite side of the fence. Deaver speaks about the great love between Ronald and Nancy Reagan and about her devotion to him in his last difficult years.
There seems to be a consensus here that he either was a great President or very close to it.
I somehow missed in these conversations the depth of feeling given when people speak immediately after a person has gone. There is a strange lack of emotionality for a tribute show of this kind. Nonetheless the show does honor the work and memory of a President who one of the members of his Cabinet George Schultz says was a President who loved freedom and loved America and did much to promote the advancement of both in the world.
