Live jazz recording,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Charlie Mingus Live (Antibes, 1960) [Vinyl LP] [Stereo] [UK Import] (Vinyl)
This is a live recording by a few of the masters of jazz. They are in top form, they are inspired and inspirational. They are reflecting upon the others improvisation and energy.Ted Curson on trumpet, though not as famous as his piers,he holds his own with soulful swingin' blowing.Eric Dolphy -alto saxophone the avante garde instrumentalist extrordinaire is at home with Mingus' compositions, and is an exceptional ear candy whipper snapper.Booker Ervin-tenor saxophone - is one of the most soulful attacking soloist ever to be recorded and probably very highly underrated,he as well as Eric is securely at home with Mingus at the compositional and improvisational helm.Danny Richmond- drums -, he is the cool swingin' Beat cat that accents and rides like he is the only cat around. Charlie Mingus -bass and piano. It has been said that if he lived longer ,he would have reached the compositional stature the likes of Beethoven- did i spell Beethoven right? Well, when you listen to "Better Git it in your Soul" you will realize that he is every bit astute as Beethoven in the sense that he is painting a very vivid picture through sound and dynamics. Soulful, eloquent, driving, hectic, releasing, power beyond limit, yes,he is every iota at tune with the force of this amazing cavalcade of emotions such as the great Beethoven is. Sittin side by side I,d say. This is recording is a must for any jazz fan.I feel very fortunate to have a copy of this record in my possession,so I can enjoy the reflections made by these monolithic jazz men , time and time again - and again !It is Charles Mingus - " Live at Antibes " jazz festival, and it sounds as intimate as a small jazz club, yet as huge as in a stadium. Two Thumbs up !!!
