The Lahiri segment Rational competence without the fire, April 6, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Toni Morrison; Jhumpa Lahiri (December 24, 2003) (DVD)
Charlie Rose shows in this conversation more enthusiam for Lahiri's work than Lahiri herself does. She is intelligent, matter- of- fact about the high praise her writing has received. She answers Charlie Rose's questions with a quiet competence, but without fire or passion. She even addresses the question of her 'ethnic identity' or ' self- identification' in a kind of bland, and non- inspiring way. All this is fine and a writer should not have to be a show- biz personality too. Yet the absence of striking remarks, of seemingly great interest in any subject even in her own work make for bland viewing also.
