3.0 out of 5 stars The Moyers' segment Faith, Reason and some stupidity, March 6, 2008
Bill and Judith Moyers come to talk about a new seven- part series for Television they are doing called "Faith and Reason". They went to a conference chaired by Salman Rushdie on the same subject at Cooper Union in New York. They interview writers, people they believe capable of seeing complexity and multiple- reality on this subject. Their first show is a full hour with Rushdie who has for ten years was under a fatwa and lived under constant threat of being murdered. Charlie Rose broadcasts two excerpts. One in which Richard Rodriguez talks about the sense of peace which came to him before a critical operation. He makes the point that others having prayed for him was significant.
Both Moyers' speak about their own religious faith. Judith Moyers is a person of faith who has her doubts, and Bill Moyers is 'on the line'. All this is fine .However when they reported on the writer Mary Gordon's saying she has more sympathy for a suicide - bomber than for a shopper in our consumer culture my instant reaction was disgust. How patronizing, ugly and ignorant. Did she ever speak with a suicide- bomber's victim's family members? Perhaps she should show a bit of understanding for them. I also did not like Moyers' quite stupid grouping together a West Bank settler, Islamic fundamentalists and fundamentalist Christians. So far as I know it is only the Islamists who advocate mass- murder of others in order to achieve their political- religious goals. There are moreover tens of millions of Islamists who advocate violence whereas those who do so in the other 'fundamentalist' traditions are marginal. Charlie Rose is a great person, a generous good spirit . But there are times he should be more critical and not simply go along with what others tell him.
