Book Description

February 17, 1977
A cagey British spy fights enemies from without and within
Charlie Muffin is an anachronism. He came into the intelligence service in the early 1950s, when the government, desperate for foot soldiers in the impending Cold War, dipped into the middle class for the first time. Despite a lack of upper-class bearing, Charlie survived twenty-five years on the espionage battle’s front line: Berlin. But times have changed: The boys from Oxford and Cambridge are running the shop again, and they want to get rid of the middle-class spy who’s a thorn in their side. They have decided that it’s time for Charlie to be sacrificed.

But Charlie Muffin didn’t survive two decades in Berlin by being a pushover. He intends to go on protecting the realm, and won’t let anyone from his own organization get in his way.

Review

“Pure delight!” —Chicago Tribune

“Charlie Muffin is a bit of a loser. He isn't brave like Bond, or clever like Maigret. Very smooth and fast and full of splendid dialogue.” —Allan Prior

“Charlie is a marvellous creation.” —Daily Mail

From AudioFile

Charlie Muffin, an endearing spy, irritates his new boss and co-workers because of his appearance and age, but that doesn't stop them from taking the credit for his accomplishments. But Charlie perseveres and proves to be right over and over again in this story of the capture of a KGB general who is running a spy network in England. Hayward Morse ably creates voices for each of the many characters, using a variety of convincing accents, though once in a while he doesn't shift to the correct voice. He is especially effective in his timing and makes the humor of certain situations evident. Through all the plot twists, there is never any hint of the surprising outcome. 4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing Spy Story, January 8, 2009
This review is from: Charlie Muffin (Hardcover)
Charlie Muffin is an experienced, rumpled, and endearing working-class British agent. Charlie irritates his boss and fellow agents with his appearance and accent, yet he always manages to get results. After narrowly escaping death during a border crossing in Berlin, Charlie is convinced that the department has decided he is expendable. Back in London, Charlie finds that two younger agents are now sharing his office while Charlie's desk has been moved to what used to be the secretary's rest room. But the in-experienced upper-class agents who are given preference begin bungling the defection of the head of the KGB, and Charlie finds himself back in action. This amusing spy story is fast-paced and satisfying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inimitable!, August 25, 2010
This review is from: Charlie Muffin (Hardcover)
A marvellous story, made into an equally marvellous espionage thiller for the small screen starring the late and great, and I mean GREAT, David Hemmings. I salute you, Sir! Freemantle is a master of plot and storytellimg. I wish all his stories had been made into films with David Hemmings in the starring role.
