Editorial Reviews

Throughout his career, Charlie Murphy has done it all. As co-star of Comedy Central's top-rated Chappelle's Show, writer of the DreamWorks comedy Norbit and voice on the critically acclaimed cartoon The Boondocks, Charlie Murphy has made quite a name for himself. His film credits have spanned the last 20 years, ranging from Harlem Nights with Eddie Murphy to The Perfect Holiday with Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union. Now, drenched in the same: in your face, style of comedy that has made him a fan favorite, Charlie Murphy delivers his debut stand-up performance, I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE, as only he can...raw and uncut.

Oh this was painful to watch. I'm not joking. This is paaaainful!!! I used to enjoy watching Charlie Murphy's interaction and skits when he was on the Chappelle Show but standup is not something Charlie should be doing. At least, not by himself. Standup up is not easy to do. Watch this video and you will see what I'm talking about.

Watching this video was like watching someone who was given top billing at a comedy show when they should have been auditioning for open mike night. The jokes (stories) were long and definitely not worth waiting for the punchline or funny ending that was supposed to follow.

I truly can't believe a company is actually marketing this. Then again, some company out there marketted CDs for William Hung...

Sorry Charlie. I think you do your best when you work and play off other funny people. Stick to what works.

I am adding this part of my review to what I wrote earlier. When I wrote my review, I noticed that Addicted2blogs had already reviewed this dvd and gave it high marks. I thought that was odd since my friends and I all agree that Charlie Murphy's standup routine in this dvd were terrible. If you google "Charlie Murphy standup reviews" you find a lot of people commenting that Charlie Murphy's standup routine was not that good. I had a theory about why Addicted2blogs gave such a glowing review for this dvd and searched around for what else he has given reviews on, the companies that distribute many of those movies and who else is joining him in giving reviews for the same videos. I did not note this when I first posted my review but decided to wait and see who else chimed in about this dvd. Then, up pops a review by "Hector" and what a surprise, he too gives high marks for this dvd.

1.0 out of 5 stars Charlie Should Apologize... June 6, 2010
What happen? Charlie is a funny guy and I saw this and it bombed bad. why? it seemed more a social commentary or just him plain speaking than even trying? It's not funny which is strange. I hope he does another special and corrects this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not funny April 5, 2010
A Kid's Review
I got this thinking that he could bring some of his comedy from the "Chappelle Show" to his stand up, and agonized to finish watching it. He spent the first 10 minutes saying, "I will not apologize." I guess he knew he wasn't funny and wanted to let you know before you watched. His jokes were not funny, and when he did the Rick James vs. Charley Murphy bit, it came across as a reach. Do not buy, rent, or waste your time watching this.

Ironically, an apology is exactly what Charlie Murphy owes anyone who watches this excruciatingly unfunny stand-up project. Murphy's material is stale and poorly-written; his timing and delivery is, to put it kindly, amateurish and off; and most disturbingly of all, Murphy fails -- big time -- to live up to the comic legacy and laugh-inducing expectations derived from his better-known little brother -- as well as his own well-deserved reputation as a hilarious cast member on the stellar "Chappelle's Show." I was saddened for the show's live audience members: they came out to the show earnestly expecting laughs from the man on stage, and he delivered none. Bottom line is: Murphy should stick to sketch projects and perhaps movies and such. But, it's made blatantly clear with this troubling example: Charlie Murphy can't do stand-up! I challenge you to make it to the end of this project -- and if you do, inevitably, you'll feel disappointed and angry, frustrated for wasting 63 precious minutes of your life, and undoubtedly desirous of that aforementioned apology Murphy refuses to provide!

1.0 out of 5 stars OK CHARLIE!...... YOU CAN START APOLOGIZING! March 7, 2010
This is an extremely disappointing set by "funny" man Charlie Murphy. The set starts slow and never reaches any momentum. The best joke is the last one and believe me, it's not worth sitting through the rest of this poor excuse of a comedy routine to hear it. I have seen Charlie in various shows before and I know he is capable of being very funny, but this set is more like a night of rambling chatter. It's one of the flatest comedy stand ups I've ever seen.

1.0 out of 5 stars I was there November 11, 2010
By kenzy
I went to this show a couple years back at the Wilbur Theatre where it was filmed. I have not watched the DVD because I never want to relive that horrible night of absolute boredom! The venue was a dry venue to begin so on top of watching the worst excuse for stand-up I have ever witnessed, I was sober the whole damn time. Do not waste your $20 on this DVD. I paid $100 to fall asleep in the front row. Horrible.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Wanted to Laugh... March 18, 2011
I, like everyone else, was led to buy this DVD because I was a fan of the Chappelle Show, and in the show Charlie Murphy's hilarious! Unfortunately, this did not translate well into his stand-up routine.
It just wasn't funny. I'm not trying to be malicious, but I literally cringed a few times during the movie.
Maybe stick to sketch shows? Because stand-up doesn't really seem to be his thing.

Charlie Murphy is not a legitimate headliner. There are opening acts far funnier than Mr. Murphy. There weren't enough laughs to justify an hour.
