Oliver Todd speaks to Charlie Rose about a biography of Camus he has written. He speaks about Camus as moral voice who dared immediately after the Second World War to challenge the orthodoxy of the Intellectual Left in France and criticize Stalinist Russia. Todd speaks of Camus contemporary and sometime rival Sartre's being totally lost in a world of words and able through his own intellectual gymnastics to avoid reality. Camus is presented as someone with his feet on the ground, the child of poor whites in Algeria one who did not allow slogans and cliches to detract him from looking honestly at reality. Todd speaks of Camus's great talent, speaks of his ambivalence after the war in regard to the war in Algeria. Camus could never come out for Algerian independence though he opposed the colonial French regime's continuing in power.. Camus is commended for his courage. Todd talks about Camus' special connection to his illiterate mother, who was also slightly deaf. Todd also commends for artistic as well as moral integrity, for his completing carefully each work of his. It is interesting that Todd considers 'The Fall' Camus best book and not what I believe one of the finest literary works of the century 'La Peste' (The Plague). In any case this was a truly rich and high- level conversation , one I greatly enjoyed.
