I probably own a ton of instructional jazz-guitar books and the difference between any other book and this one, is that here you get up and running directly.
The author has really taken his time to figure out the optimum fingerings for the heads and solos. And to my suprise I hear my self running thru anthropology like a hot knife thru butter.
Belive me I experimented with other fingerings, but I hitherto have found the authors suggestions to be optimized.
Perhaps there are books that goes deeper into the theoretical aspect of Charlie Parkers music, but I personally think it's more fun to learn to play it first and only then analyse it.
Otherwise it's easy to get stuck ( and bored).
I cannot recommend this book enough. It's the best!
I hope and pray that the author will follow up with another one, (why not a book with Dizzy solos the next time?). When it comes I will definetly buy it. Until then, this book provides for plenty of magical moments.
Buy it and have fun.
Klas

This book has opened to me the wide vistas of jazz guitar. I have played bluegrass, playing hot leads modeled after Doc Watson/Dave Bromberg/Tony Rice, as well as blues, rock, etc. I always picked up songs by ear immediately, but I had trouble "hearing" jazz. By "slowing" Parker solos down to the printed page, the author enabled me to play, listen, hear, and replicate what I was hearing. Like another reviewer on this site, I also found the tablature to be of great help. As a result of using it, I am changing the way I finger EVERYTHING, not just jazz, and it has also opened me up to tons of ideas on how to move up and down the neck in ways that I have never done before. (Sometimes, I prefer a different solution to a problem than the author recommends, but most frequently his approach is best.) It really has improved, and continues to improve, my rock, blues, and bluegrass playing, while at the same time leading me to tons of fun improvising on all sorts of jazz tunes, bop or otherwise.

Great thanks to the author, Mark Voelpel!

I have been working with this book for a few months now. If you're looking to rip some licks or to learn the heads of his tunes without being able to read standard notation then this book is for you. I definately recommend a more comprehensive study of Parker's tunes if you're interested in this book, The Charlie Parker Omni book.
