Even as a Classical musician, I find great joy in this book. Yes, saxophonists would do better to get the E-flat edition, since that was Parker's axe and everything works better. As a trumpeter, of course I'm using the B-flat edition, which sits very well for trumpet. In fact, the range requirements are so reasonable that long practice sessions on this music at the end of the day are not overly tiring. This book is a window into Parker's genius, and a welcome diversion from repetitive exercises or square etude books, because the music is very challenging and complex. Enjoy.

Sax players should buy the Eb edition!,

This book has long been known as the bible of bebop. However, I STRONGLY recommend that saxophone players buy the Eb edition. This Bb edition, transposed for obvious reasons, does not work well for tenor sax. It goes beyond the instrument's range, and it's just plain awkward to play. Unless you are a trumpet player or you are using this book in a group setting, DON'T buy this edition. Get this one: Charlie Parker Omnibook for E Flat Instruments : Recorded Solos

Bought for my Freshman son. He plays in jazz band and really got into this book. He said that the transpositions were accurate and that it was very playable, but still challenging.

This is a great book for learning to play jazz and improvise, on any instrument.
Transcribed by Jamey Aebersold, this book is the definitive collection of Parker transcriptions. Take the licks you see here, listen to Parker play, practice til you're fast enough to play along with him, then take the licks around all 12 keys. You'll never, EVER be bored again!!! Make sure you read and follow the page that says "how to use this book".

This book is a classic. Charlie Parker recorded all performances on Alto. Sometimes the Trancriptions for Tenor Sax don't work as well.

I bought a book that doesn't work well for Tenor. Now reading the reviews it has been covered over and over again that this book goes well beyond the range of the tenor sax. So I bought it for nothing.Oops on my part. |
