More About the Author

Hi! I'm Ree Drummond, also known as The Pioneer Woman. After marrying a cattle rancher, moving to the country, and having babies for ten years, I started a blog on a whim in 2006. There, I shared stories from my childhood, photos of my children growing up in the country, and eventually, recipes I cooked for my family. This eventually led to my first cookbook, which was released in 2009, and two cookbooks since. I love writing about food (and taking photos of food!) both in my cookbooks and on my website. I also love eating the food I write about!

I have enjoyed writing a series of children's picture books based on my very lethargic and malodorous Basset Hound named Charlie. "Charlie the Ranch Dog" has been a sweet experience for me.

My Food Network show, "The Pioneer Woman," premiered in 2011 and it's still being filmed on the Oklahoma ranch I share with my husband and four children.

Visit my website, ThePioneerWoman.com for more up-to-the-minute details!

I ordered this book for my literacy based preschool. I am a reading teacher and this book works for my beginning readers who have established some basic sight words and have very good concepts about print.

Good writer, and the way she makes the dog, the star of the show. Good for getting kids interested in books. Reminds me of the Dick and Jane books. Sent them to nieces/nephews kids. They love them.

My grandson watches Pioneer Woman with his mom often. This was a fun book for him as he recognized "Charlie" right away.

The story is very simple and easy to read for beginner readers. I bought this as a Christmas gift for a boy who loves dogs and snow. It was a simple reading book and the colorful pages draws the child into the story even more. He laughed at the story and really liked it very much. I would recommend this story for every child who is beginning to learn to read.

As a Christmas stocking stuffer idea for beginning readers, we highly recommend this winter installment of Charlie the Ranch Dog discovering the wonders of snow and even his inner hero.

This is a terrific treat for youngsters and basset hound fans alike.

Rating: 10/10.

The best part of CHARLIE'S SNOW DAY is the adorable art. I think Diane deGroat did a nice job producing kid-pleasing artwork suitable for her audience. Charlie and Walter the dogs are definitely cute.

The story is just about fun in the snow. People play. Dogs play. Walter gets buried. Everyone goes home. Good time all around.

The story is told in first person, which is sort of fun. Here's a sample:

Finally, I get to the top.
I don't want to play outside anymore.
All I want is a nap in the warm house!

One of the things I'm ambivalent about is the use of slang. Charlie says "check it out" and "everyone is having a blast". I know it's not really a problem but there's obviously a part of me that thinks children should learn these phrases from friends and family, and not from a book. (yeah, stupid conservative language streak)

WHOOSH!
The snow sprays my nose.
My ears flap in the wind.
This is great!

The text is at Lexile 250L.

I have Charlie the Ranch dog original in hardcover, glossy pages and grandson loves it.
I am not sure if it is because this is "I can Read" book or not but it is half size and printed on dull paper, so not as eye catching as the full size art work in other Charlie books.
Still cute, but bit of a let down when it was not what I was expecting.
