Book Description

Meet Charlie.

He's a ranch dog. Breakfast is his life, especially when bacon is involved. Charlie has dangly ears, floppy skin, and big fat paws. And he loves living in the country. That's because he works like a dog...fixing fences, gardening, and helping his family out on the range.

Yep, it's all work, all the time for Charlie the ranch dog. In fact, he's probably working right now...

Zzzzzzz....

A ranch dog's work is never done!

Come along as Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, introduces us to her beloved short-legged pioneer dog named Charlie.

Whew. That was a close call. It’s a good thing I decided to stay home.

Review

“The comic irony of the text will amuse readers, and Charlie’s quirks will win many fans.” (School Library Journal)

“Young readers will chuckle at the unabashed, obvious humor and will especially enjoy finding the hidden, unnamed chipmunk buddy on every page.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Adult readers will recognize in Charlie’s voice the understated humor that has made Drummond’s blog so successful; kids should find it irresistible.” (Publishers Weekly)

“DeGroat’s cozy illustrations picture a beguiling Charlie on a comfortable ranch with appealing accoutrement. An observant chipmunk adds an extra touch of humor, and a lasagna recipe is thrown in for good measure.” (Booklist)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for my little guys! April 27, 2011
By Susan
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I received this book today and immediately sat on the couch with my boys (3 1/2 & 1) to read it. The 1 year old was mesmerized, for 3 pages. Which is 3 times longer than usual with a book he's not allowed to chew on! However, my 3 1/2 year old loved it. He found the chipmunk on every page, and he loved the fact that Charlie napped while Suzie was off doing all the work.

It's not an exciting book, there's not a ton of action and adventure, but from what I have seen from Ms. Drummond's blog, Charlie is not very exciting or full of action. This book perfectly reflects its subject-- a lazy, sleepy, adorable dog.

Definitely recommend it for preschool ages, and it has the potential to become a treasured favorite for kids as they grow up.

5.0 out of 5 stars childrens animal book July 21, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Ordered this book for my 2 year old grandson's birthday. We have a bassett that he calls dog, dog. He recognizes Charlie as the same kind of dog. Both he and his 4 year old brother love having the story read to them. Their mom loves The Prairie Woman and knew she would relate to Charlie since she got our basset when she was 18 and he stays with her family when we travel. Love the illustrations. Would like to see another follow-up book about Charlies adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charlie is sweet and adorable January 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story is written from the perspective of a "working" Bassett Hound. It's a sweet story that should please both parent and child. My eight year old read it to me and there were opportunities for talking points as well. The illustrations were excellent as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift! July 20, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book to give as a baby shower present. Not only does it have a great story, the illustrations are so detailed and colorful! Everyone commented on what a great children's book it was. Definitely worth the money. As someone who follows The Pioneer Woman blog, I expected nothing less from Ree Drummond and was not disappointed.

Due to our affection for basset hounds (we have one darling lone), my grandson loves the book. It's so typical of the characteristics true to bassets. More, please!

More About the Author

Hi! I'm Ree Drummond, also known as The Pioneer Woman. After marrying a cattle rancher, moving to the country, and having babies for ten years, I started a blog on a whim in 2006. There, I shared stories from my childhood, photos of my children growing up in the country, and eventually, recipes I cooked for my family. This eventually led to my first cookbook, which was released in 2009, and two cookbooks since. I love writing about food (and taking photos of food!) both in my cookbooks and on my website. I also love eating the food I write about!

I have enjoyed writing a series of children's picture books based on my very lethargic and malodorous Basset Hound named Charlie. "Charlie the Ranch Dog" has been a sweet experience for me.

My Food Network show, "The Pioneer Woman," premiered in 2011 and it's still being filmed on the Oklahoma ranch I share with my husband and four children.

Visit my website, ThePioneerWoman.com for more up-to-the-minute details!
