I received this book today and immediately sat on the couch with my boys (3 1/2 & 1) to read it. The 1 year old was mesmerized, for 3 pages. Which is 3 times longer than usual with a book he's not allowed to chew on! However, my 3 1/2 year old loved it. He found the chipmunk on every page, and he loved the fact that Charlie napped while Suzie was off doing all the work.

It's not an exciting book, there's not a ton of action and adventure, but from what I have seen from Ms. Drummond's blog, Charlie is not very exciting or full of action. This book perfectly reflects its subject-- a lazy, sleepy, adorable dog.

Definitely recommend it for preschool ages, and it has the potential to become a treasured favorite for kids as they grow up.

Ordered this book for my 2 year old grandson's birthday. We have a bassett that he calls dog, dog. He recognizes Charlie as the same kind of dog. Both he and his 4 year old brother love having the story read to them. Their mom loves The Prairie Woman and knew she would relate to Charlie since she got our basset when she was 18 and he stays with her family when we travel. Love the illustrations. Would like to see another follow-up book about Charlies adventures.

The story is written from the perspective of a "working" Bassett Hound. It's a sweet story that should please both parent and child. My eight year old read it to me and there were opportunities for talking points as well. The illustrations were excellent as well.

I bought this book to give as a baby shower present. Not only does it have a great story, the illustrations are so detailed and colorful! Everyone commented on what a great children's book it was. Definitely worth the money. As someone who follows The Pioneer Woman blog, I expected nothing less from Ree Drummond and was not disappointed.

Due to our affection for basset hounds (we have one darling lone), my grandson loves the book. It's so typical of the characteristics true to bassets. More, please!

I loved that Charlie was exactly like a typical bassett hound. The story was very entertaining to my 7 year old

I'm probably not your average purchaser of this book. Have a 7 year old girl and thought she'd like it, but my original motivation for the purchase was to read it after reading Mrs. Drummond's blog on the creative process of making this book. I'm working on a picture book of my own and have discovered I have a lot to learn about the industry and the process.

Now my review:
I love this book because it does and excellent job of giving the reader a full picture of Charlie's personality. You'll note also that the words and pictures work perfectly together and the pictures also add a second storyline. Charlie's actions don't align with his mental picture of his actions and the art portrays that difference perfectly in a way that young readers should see. Additionally, I love the narration because it does a wonderful job of teaching kids about live on the ranch without lecturing.

Being the Pioneer Woman, Mrs. Drummond also included a favorite recipe at the end. Haven't tried the recipe yet, but I definitely will. After I try the recipe and get feedback from my 7 year old, I'll be sure to come back and add to my review.

100% definitely think you and your children will love this book. And it's worth owning a copy because you'll want to revisit Charlie's ranch from time to time. And maybe dig up that recipe for Charlie's lasagna.

I read Ree Drummond's blog occasionally, and my family loves it when I prepare her "Ranch Hand" meals. So, when I saw this book on the shelf in Target, I picked it up for my daughter's birthday. It's an above average childrens' book, although not the best we own. My daughter who loves ALL dogs, especially my parents' Jack Russell, LOVES the Charlie character and thinks it's so funny how he keeps falling asleep on the job. She definitely keeps tabs on where Suzie is as well. I enjoy it because I know about Charlie from the blog, and the illustrations are truly amazing. I don't know that Ree's writing style is particularly suited towards writing for children, but she certainly knows how to personify an animal. She gives Charlie his own, believable voice. I think it would be nice if she wrote a sequel from Suzie's point of view. Or maybe Daisy the cow!
