5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying January 12, 2010
Format:DVD
I was a little bit worried ordering this DVD because nobody had reviewed it yet and I've had some bad experiences lately with some shoddy quality DVDs (see my review of one of Anne Murray's DVDs). But I'm happy to report that overall this all-regions DVD made in Germany turned out to be pretty decent.

It is not remastered, so you do get a bit of grain like on tape, but the picture is quite clear and the colours are bright and vibrant. The case says it has surround sound, but since I don't have a surround set-up I can't comment on this point.

Y'know, it's funny how you might not appreciate something at first, but as time goes on you find yourself missing it. That's the way it has been for me with Charlie Rich's music.

Back in the 70s, Charlie had 2 of the biggest hits of the decade with "The Most Beautiful Girl" and "Behind Closed Doors". You could literally hear these songs playing EVERYWHERE you went, for the entire decade and years afterwards. This led me to get kind of sick of Charlie's music and to even view it as kind of tacky.

But then couple of years back, just out of the blue I suddenly found that his songs kept popping into my head, and I realized how long it had been since I had heard them or heard anything at all about Charlie Rich. When I looked him up, I was saddened to learn that Charlie had died back in 1995.

I have fond memories of riding in the car as a child with country music like Charlie Rich playing on my dad's 8-track tape deck. Well, my dad is gone now, and just last week my mom gave away the box of 8-track tapes she had found in the basement -- including one by Charlie Rich -- to a local charity collection drive. It seems that day by day, that time in my life is growing more and more distant...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rare Concert By The Silver Fox January 29, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I was plesantly surprised by this rare BBC concert by Charlie Rich in his prime in 1975 after he had won the CMA'S Entertainer of the Year trophy the previous year and was at the absolute peak of his long sought but hard earned career as country-pops chief icon before Kenny Rogers came along in 1977. Having personally seen him perform that same year at the Las Vegas Hilton Showroom where Elvis would open the following night, this show is very similar to the show he staged closing night, and both feature a full orchestra and the Silver Fox alternating between sitting at a piano and standing up to sing his signiture tunes like The Most Beautiful Girl IN The World and A Very Special Love Song. Rich includes most of his mumber one country singles as well as some amazing turns at the piano where he plays everything from 50's rock&roll to Frank Sinatra's Nice & Easy. Sun Records Founder Sam Philps Said of all the Artists He worked with at Sun, including Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis, Rich was the one with the most talent to rival that of his earlier disovery, Elvis Presley. This DVD is worth its price in gold to feature one of the best and most underrated singers of the 20th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars What It Would've Been Like... July 21, 2010
Format:DVD
...to go to a Charlie Rich concert! This was a great DVD. Good for those people in the audience who got to live to see him in action. (No I'm not jealous; it's a sin, but I AM a little sad that Charlie didn't live long enough...) Anyways, great to watch. He opened up with "The Most Beautiful Girl." Then he went into the standard he recorded 2x himself, "Nice N' Easy." Next, he got into his then-latest single, the self-co-write "Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High)." He followed w/ a quiet talk about Sun Records, then performed his 1st hit, the self-penned "Lonely Weekends," with added lyrics. Next was a medley of hits: "A Very Special Love Song," "There Won't Be Anymore," "I Love My Friend," and "She Called Me Baby." Next was a performance of "Big Boss Man," which he performed pretty frequently (and recorded 2x himself prior as well). Then he went into "Mohair Sam," in the middle of the music! (From bates1972 on Youtube: "Look out for Charlie's funny face!") After that, he talked a little about "Mohair Sam," and as before, in a low voice. Finally, he closes with his breakthrough hit "Behind Closed Doors." You'll then wonder why you didn't get to be born in time for a Charlie Rich concert like I have. Like he said once (not on the DVD), 'it might have been, but it never was.' Vital in any Charlie Rich collection!
