Tom Brokaw segment, November 2, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose - Tom Brokaw (October 30, 2008) (DVD)
I always wondered how Tom Brokaw became an anchor on a major network. He speaks as if he has marbles in his mouth. In any case he has proven himself through the years a man of real accomplishment, especially in his writing of two books, one on his father's greatest American generation, and the other on the sixties. He comes to Charlie Rose with a paperback copy of the book on the sixties. He speaks about his most recent role as replacement for Tim Russert after Russert died of a heart attack. Brokaw is a sensible, knowledgable journalist. And his talk with Charlie Rose is that of two peers and friends.
There is quite naturally talk about the Presidential Race and Brokaw clearly supports Obama. However he astutely points out certain questions about Obama primarily relating to his great caution. He also makes the point made by so many that the presidential debates did not address many of the most important questions a new President will face. When asked about international problems the President has to deal with Brokaw makes a fundamental if frequent mistake. He speaks about the solving of what he calls the Israeli- Palestinian problem as nexus of all Middle East problems. Absolutely wrong. The Shiite- Sunnite division, the Iranian- Saudi rivalry , the factional strife in Lebanon, the problematic situation in Egypt etc etc have meaning and dynamic of their own. The economic and educational backwardness of the Middle East, the failure to deal properly with modernity has been going on for a long time.
At the end of the interview Charlie Rose hints that Brokaw will next be called upon to do public service. Brokaw demurs in a non- definitive way.
This was a quite interesting show although not a very exciting one.
