The picture that received the most nominations for Oscars for 2007 is the Coen Brothers adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's 'No Country for Old Men'. The brother director- producer team come to the studio of Charlie Rose with two of the films actor, Josh Brolin and Xavier Bardeem. They are unassuming and low- key. The description of what they are as directors is given more by Charlie Rose and the two actors than by themselves. Brolin speaks about their producing 'authentic films'. In this film and I understand in many others they are masters of depicting a certain American locale, in this one West Texas, in others Los Angelos ( The Big Leibowitz) and Arizona, and North Dakota, Minnesota (Fargo). This film has an undercurrent of violence and Coen films most often do have startling scenes of violence. Often their films have screwball humor but as I understand it this one does not.
I do not know exactly why I am reporting this as I do not like 'violence' in films, do not take particular interest in 'noir' movies and no matter how high the quality am not likely to go and see this film.
But the segment with Rose is well- done, informative, gives a sense of who these people are and what they are doing.
