4.0 out of 5 stars The Google line unchallenged by hard questioning, November 25, 2007
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Eric Schmidt (June 3, 2005) (DVD)
Charlie Rose is an intelligent, considerate , and at times it seems, too nice person. Here he had the CEO of Google with him explaining Google's party - line, and he did not raise the thousand and one questions which might skeptically have been asked about it. CEO Schmidt says Google's aim is to make all the information in the world universally available. What this means I suppose is that each person can try to find out about whatever they want to find about. But what if it is in a subject they might not have the mental ability to understand. What good will providing the equations of the most advanced work being done in physics today do for those who understand nothing about physics?
He at one point says that this providing of information will make for a more peaceful, and better world.
He should have been asked about the 'false information' spread on the Web, about Google's providing 'hate stuff' readily. He should have been asked about the whole question of the immorality of providing information to terrorists on how to make weapons. He should have been asked about the crimes which are aided by the Information provided by Google.
He should have been challenged about Google's digitizing information and preparing to make use of it without compensating in any way those who produced it.
Schmidt is an intelligent, fluent, and agreeable person. He explains Google policy , its focus on search and innovation, its advertising policy, its seventy/ twenty/ ten division of workers' time. It was nice to hear him admit that one effect of searching on the Internet is making the person feel humble at all they cannot possibly know. He does not however say anything about the effect of having to deal with so much junk and disinformation on the Interent. He does indicate however that Google has now reached a scale and a power that few are likely to be able to seriously compete with it. He talks too about personalizing all information and this also in relation to advertising.
This is an interesting interview but it could have been improved through a questioning of Schmidt in a more skeptical way.
