This interview takes place hours before the Fed will step in with an eighy- five billion dollar package to in effect take over AIG. Greenberg comes to appeal not for this solution which he fears but for a 'bridging loan'.He is the person who built this organization into the world's largest insurer. He was pushed out of control in 2005 after being investigated on criminal charges by then NY State Atty.Gen Elliot Spitzer. Greenberg was cleared of the charges, but the whole situation cost him his job. He remains the largest individual shareholder in the organization but without influence on its operation. He tells Charlie Rose that he has foreseen the present crisis and has been for months offering management his help in resolving it. They have not answered him. He points to his contacts with foreign countries, China, Korea among others as enabling him to raise the large sums needed for AIG collateral. He says the downrating in AIG's credit is responsible for a good part of the crisis. Greenberg is a man in his early eighties, and was a major power- broker in the financial world. He also has a long record of public service. He comes to Charlie Rose seeking to not only save the work of his lifetime, but to save the fortunes, jobs, savings of thousands of people who work in the firm. He comes across as a sympathetic, reasonable and very smart person. Nonetheless he is making his own case, and the show could have used balance in having someone with a more critical view of Greenberg himself.
One element involved here is the sense of how the mighty have fallen in this present financial crisis. The shares of AIG which were worth sixty- dollars per share at some time during this year are now three .
I know too former billionaires may be the last people in the world who need our sympathy, as they are still probably very wealthy people. Still there is something wrenching in seeing someone who built something with dedication all their lives , struggle futilely as it goes down.
