5.0 out of 5 stars Rose interviews King but then King interviews Charlie Rose a bit, December 17, 2007
This was an extremely interesting interview. Two of the most well- known American interviewers speak with each other. They are 'insiders' and seem to know everybody, the whole who's who of American life, politicians, entertaintment and cultural figures, sports stars, whoever means something to the broader American public. They go from one to another as if they were all part of one little village. At one minute they speak about Ted Turner and Jane Fonda, and the next about Dick Cheney. And many of these stories show the close connection of the interviewers with the VIP's. And they of course as people sought out by the VIPs are in a way the biggest VIPs of all.
I have noticed there are certain rules of this high- power super-gossip. One is that there are a lot of compliments about the person talked about. One does not knock anybody ordinarily. The name of the game is staying in favor and one does not make friends by putting people down. If one has a negative opinion one keeps it to oneself. At one point in the interview Rose asks King about his opinion of the Bush- Cheney years. King says he does not have to answer because he will be interviewing these people again. Okay, this is an answer, but it is not an outright one, and one that can be quoted back as negative.
In any case what I found most interesting in this interview was not the Charlie Rose interviewing Larry King, but the brief moments when King took advantage of his position and had the gumption to ask Charlie Rose the same kinds of questions Rose had asked him about his father. King tells a story about his loss of his father at the age of nine, his great bitterness, his subsequent relationship to religion.
What was most interesting however was hearing Charlie Rose speak with love and admiration of his own father who he describes as the most self- effacing considerate person he has ever known. Charlie Rose so obviously walks in his father's footsteps. His greatness as an interviewer is his ability to really give to the other person, to listen, to let them tell their story, to show sympathy with them. He is an especially good person for one in the kind of power position he is in.
